Real Women Project

The art found throughout Dr. Levy’s offices is part of the Real Women Project, a non-profit initiative that shines a light on the beauty of all women through sculpture, music, poetry, and other art forms.

The 13 sculptures in the Real Women Project seek to unveil and celebrate the diverse beauty of the female form. Each piece in the series represents the individuality and unique beauty of all women.

Founded in 1998 by Dr. Levy, Dr. Donna Brooks, a retired ob-gyn, and Cathy Conheim, a psychotherapist, the mission of the Real Women Project aims to:

  • Help women realize and celebrate their inherent beauty, dignity, and capacity for transformation.
  • Use sculpture, poetry, video, music, and storytelling to inspire dialogue and self-awareness, to broaden our definition of beauty, and to deepen our experience of well being. This goal is rooted in the belief that self-acceptance is the foundation for mental, physical and spiritual health.
  • Include women of all ages, cultures and ethnicity who come to understand our oneness and commonality in the process of sharing our stories.
  • Spread an epidemic of health through the repetition and transmission of affirming images and messages.
  • Throw away the negative ideas and limitations about how women are portrayed in the media.
  • Replace these ideas with new images that empower women to explore their own beliefs on inner and outer beauty and recognize how these beliefs impact self-esteem and overall health.

"Twenty years of disease left me believing my body was my betrayer. Despite my apprehension at posing nude I was amazed at my own acceptance of that very lumpy, bumpy body...my body-my beauty. [This] experience brought me to another level of healing and understanding and my desire to be a role model for health and healing."
